Ernestine "Tina" Mata

Ernestine “Tina” Mata peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 1st, 2024, at the age of 88.  She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and other family members.  She was born to Secundina and Fernando Paez on November 29th, 1935, in Seguin, TX.  

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Roy Paez, and her loving husband of 59 years, Alex Mata. Left to cherish and honor her memory are her children; James Mata (Judy), Alex J. Mata (Chris), Lisa Resendez (Michael) and Karyn Mata, grandchildren; Christina Saenz, Jonathan Mata, Aaron and Ryan Resendez, Elise Mata, Larra Reid, Eric Mata and 10 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her siblings; Margarita Castellanos, Victoria Higle, Fernando Paez Jr., Gloria Garner, Phillip Paez and numerous nieces, nephews extended family and friends. Tina did not know a stranger and made friends anywhere she went.

Tina and Alex married on August 19th, 1956, in Seguin, TX. She was a steadfast military spouse for 23 years while he served in the U.S. Air Force. They spent a lifetime traveling abroad and growing a beautiful family.  Alongside her unwavering support, she found joy in thrift shopping, sewing, and creating beautiful quilts with her friends at Our Lady of Guadalupe.  Tina loved to attend Wurstfest with her family and enjoyed dancing to polka music. Her nurturing spirit extended to caring for her grandchildren, leaving a legacy of love and creativity that will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.  

Services honoring Tina will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Holy Rosary recited at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Mass at 10:30 a.m. A private burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
